Forums have etiquette that needs to be followed. Most forums have specific rules posted right up there in plain site. Few people read them. That’s the sad part. When they don’t, they end up getting their posts deleted and their accounts closed. In the process, they lose a golden marketing opportunity. Well, this article is going to give you a few simple tips on forum marketing etiquette that just might keep you from ending up another casualty of the forum wars.

The first tip I’m going to give you is the most obvious, but it’s the one that almost nobody takes. Read the darn rules. They’re usually posted in a thread called general discussion or something similar to it. Forums don’t really have a lot of rules. Most allow just about any kind of post as long as it’s not self promotional and not in poor taste, such as one that uses foul language. Even those rules vary from forum to forum, so read the rules.

Next tip is to not go barreling into the forum like a bull in a china shop. Take some time to read some of the threads there in order to get an idea of the atmosphere of the place. Some forums are more casual than others. These usually allow for a greater latitude in the type of posts that you can make. You’ll get a feel for this by reading the ones that are already there.

Okay, now here is how you actually profit from forums, especially ones that allow links to your sites in the signature. Watch out for threads started by members who are looking for answers to specific questions. If you know the answers to these questions, answer them. Don’t give one or two line answers. Give the member an answer that really helps him. This is how you build a reputation as a forum member who is helpful to others.

Over time, the members will begin to trust you and will start to look to your signature to see what you have to offer. Without having to advertise a thing, which you can’t do at most forums, you’ll be making sales on a regular basis. I should know.
